Community facility a reality “We had vision by the bucketload and truckloads of energy. What we didn’t have was money so we went to the community and asked for help and they responded very generously.” That was the word from Green Bay High School’s Board chairman,

Norm Wallace, at the official opening of the school’s Performing Arts Centre. Preliminary plans for the centre were drawn up in 2007 and an application for resource consent was made in 2008 with building work starting early last year. On July 14 all the plans and

hard work came to fruition when students, staff, parents, community leaders and those interested in the arts gathered to celebrate with performances from drama, dance and music students. Donations for the $2.2 million centre from parents and the community

Inside the new auditorium

were significant, Norm Wallace said, with other funding coming from the former Waitakere City Council, The Trusts Community Foundation, the ASB Community Trust and the Green Bay High School Board. “We haven’t just built a building, but a partnership with the entire community. The Performing Arts Centre will further knit the school with our community and it will become a place of enrichment in the community for a very long time to come,” he said. With its sprung floor, the stage is an ideal venue for dance groups

and is also suitable for music groups, fitness, exercise, martial arts, prize givings, school productions, dance recitals and concerts. The first production in the new venue, The Mighty Tasks of Hercules

will run August 10-13. Information and bookings: auditorium.bookings@greenbayhigh. school.nz

WEATHER

Long-range forecaster Ken Ring’s predictions for August

August is a changeable month, with the possibility of three distinct

wet phases, 1st-4th, 12th-14th and 26th-31st. Each phase may contain periods of heavy falls. The first week of August is both wet and sunny, with cooler overnight lows which may bring subzero temperatures to parts of Henderson Valley. Rain clears around the 5th and the second week is mostly cloudy, with showers on the weekend of 13th-14th. Skies clear about 15th and the third week of the month is mostly dry. The fourth week starts dry and sunny but ends on a wet note. Overall in the month, about a third of the days are showery, but with no more than 3 or 4 wet days in a row. Most wind this month is from the east and southeast. The barometer

may not be as averagely high as for the previous month. The average for maximum temperatures may be about 14-16°C, and for minimums 6-8°C. The strongest winds may be during the last week. Most cloudy days are between 8th-14th and 17th-20th. The highest tides at Cornwallis are around 1st and 30th. Although the Titirangi Village Market Day on the 28th may be cold and wet, most of that rain is expected overnight. Allow 24 hour error for forecasts. www.predictweather.com Ken’s book Predict Weather Almanac and Isobaric
