In April, the Korea Tourism Organisation appointed a board of experts to develop the industry. The board will recommend that South Korea issue five or six integrated casino resort licences around the country starting with Incheon, Busan and Jeju. Sun International is believed to be very interested in South Korea right now and is thought ready to pitch for one of the new casino licences expected to be announced in the near future.

Taiwan awaits another casino vote, though expectations are high for a positive result this time around. Meanwhile, border casinos continue to open in Cambodia, a country whose casinos market has been rejuvenated in the last 12 months following a short-lived casino ban. The most recent development in Cambodia is with Sokimex Investment Group, which holds a gaming concession through subsidiary Sokha Hotel Co. The developer, owner and operator is looking to create casino gaming and integrated entertainment resort facilities in south-western Cambodia, with its aim to be the number one integrated resort city development in the Indochina region. The company is also currently recruiting.

Entertainment Gaming Asia, a provider of EGMs on a participation basis to the Pan-Asian gaming industry, is also looking to develop a

casino project in the Pailin Province of Cambodia, near the Thailand border. The casino, which will be named Dreamworld Casino Pailin, is initially intended to include approximately 23 table games and 40 electronic gaming machine seats. The company has entered into a 20-year lease agreement for the land on which to construct the initial phase of the project and has a first right to lease the adjacent land, which is intended to house additional project phases including expanded casino operations and complementary facilities such as hotel rooms, a spa and other entertainment amenities.

Sri Lanka was mentioned by Frank Fahrenkopf as an expected market to open in the near future, but opinion on the floor of G2E Asia was much less optimistic with expectations that little movement will take place in the next half decade. The ‘hot’ tip instead appears to be mainland China, which is gradually opening up its gaming industry. The most visible example is the growth of its lottery sector, which is something of an iceberg thanks to the country’s sheer size. China has already taken its first step on the lottery ladder and it set to follow the global trend towards national games. Chinese people currently have to travel abroad to gamble with money flowing to foreign countries as a result. Sooner or later, the Chinese mainland will legitimately set up its own casinos.
