Genting go large in UK
Genting UK wins large casino licence to develop Resorts World at the NEC
Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council’s Licencing Committee in the UK has awarded Genting UK the large casino licence for Solihull. The casino will be part of a broader leisure and entertainment complex, Resorts World at The NEC. Genting UK will now submit a planning application in relation to the proposed development.
Paul Thandi, Chief Executive of The NEC Group said: “The decision to grant a large casino licence to Genting UK is excellent and welcomed news. It was always our first priority to find the best possible partner for The NEC Group, for Solihull and for the wider West Midlands. Genting’s strong regional connections, their international dimension and their experience in the development of large scale leisure and entertainment facilities convinced us that they were indeed that best possible partner. In Genting UK we are confident that not only have we found a partner who shares our vision of creating places where people come to discover the future; but we have also found an experienced team capable of bringing that vision to life.
“The £120m investment in Resorts World at The NEC is the next important stage in our journey to delivering ‘Destination NEC.’ The first step was the £29m redevelopment of the LG Arena, completed in late 2009. Resorts World at The NEC will complement the LG Arena and the exhibition facilities, and will broaden and deepen the appeal of a site that already attracts around three million visitors a year,” said Mr. Thandi.
Peter Brooks, Executive Deputy Chairman of Genting UK commented: “This is an important day for the communities in Solihull, The NEC and for Genting. With Solihull Council’s Licencing Committee’s decision to grant us the Large Casino Licence, we can now move on to the next stage in our project of applying for planning permission. The approved project will bring benefits to Solihull and the wider region in terms of job creation and regeneration and play a key role in the future success of The NEC.”

“This is the next step in our strong
partnership with The
NEC and we very much welcome the
confidence shown in us by Solihull Council.
We are delighted to be able to move on to the next stage of our plans and to making
Resorts World happen for the benefit of the borough and its communities.”
Peter Brooks, Exec.
Deputy Chairman of Genting UK
“I look forward to supporting the
Genting UK team through the
remaining elements of the process, in
particular in securing a planning approval. A successful outcome to that work will
result in Resorts World at The NEC opening around the
start of 2014, when it will represent a
fabulous addition not only to the NEC site,
but also to the region as a whole.” Paul Thandi,
Chief Executive of the NEC Group.
