India’s Public
Gambling Act of 1867, which prohibits public
gambling, applies to all states, barring Goa
and Sikkim which have their own laws that

(Amendment) Act of 2005 also allows the government
discretionary powers to grant licence to gaming houses.
Unlike numerous electronic gaming halls in the country, India has thus far resisted the opening of live table gaming establishments in land-based locations, though though there are several riverboat casinos operating in Goa. The Mayfair Casino, however, offers the full quota of live games offered by 150 dealers, including: roulette, black jack, baccarat, kitty, mini flush and poker. Players are charged Rs500 as entry fee although food, drinks and entertainment are complementary.
Initially, the casino at Mayfair-Gangtok will operate from the hotel’s conference hall, an area of around 1,000sq.ft. Later it will move to a 30,000sq.ft. reserved space within the premises. The casino will occupy three to four floors and will operate from 4pm-6am. Mayfair is also looking for a licence in Goa.
