Norsk Tipping seeks new licence for Oslo location
The Norwegian Lottery, Norsk Tipping, is courting controversy in the country’s capital city, Oslo, with an application for a licence that would combine gaming and alcohol in the same venue.
The Managing Director of Norsk Tipping, Torbjørn Almlid, has been at the centre of complaints from anti- gambling organisations as the application process went public. Norsk Tipping has applied for a liquor licence for its new venue, Ringside, in downtown Oslo.
The head of the Norwegian Association for Gaming Issues, Ingjerd Meen Lorvik, has raised concerns that combining alcohol with gambling in Norsk Tipping’s betting locations will lower inhibitions and create greater risk for vulnerable players.
The Ringside opened its doors
for the first time at the beginning of July and is operated by Norsk Tipping in partnership with private gaming company, Reitan Servicehandel, Rikstoto and TV2. Norsk Tipping is a public company run by the Norwegian Government. The State Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Lubna Jaffery, has now taken an interest in the debate, commenting: “While the operators of the venue have not violated any existing rules, it is important that they carefully consider their role as an important corporate citizen. They should, therefore consider the fundamental connection of alcohol and gaming.”
