There has been a lot of discussion recently about the future of the land at Hob Hill, Saltburn. At present the fields are used for recreational purposes and the grazing of horses. It should be noted that this area is the only easily accessible open space for recreation in Saltburn. This is particularly true during the winter when the steep paths to the beach, woods and Valley Gardens are very slippery. The Golf Club wish to purchase the field that is

generally known as the ‘BMX’ field (the one to the left of the overflow car park). This field has a road on one side, the ‘cut’ playing field on another and two sides adjacent to fields used by the public and for grazing horses. It has been proposed to set up a Golf Academy and practice ground here. From personal experience, having lived in a property

backing on to the 1st fairway of the golf course for 17 years, as member of the club and a regular user of Hob Hill fields, I feel that there are serious safety issues with this proposal. Even though my property was protected by a wide ‘out of bounds’ area, high trees and the depth of my back garden I suffered many broken windows, roof tiles and even cars parked in the front drive damaged by golf balls being hit over the roof. Unfortunately, a visitor in my garden was hit in the face by a ball. Treatment by a doctor and a week off work was required. Wayward golf balls are very frequent! For example, when arranging repairs to roof or windows there was no need to say who I was. Both the tile and window repairers immediately recognised my voice. Maybe I shouldn’t admit this but combining my golfing years with my neighbours, we had a total of 50 years of playing golf several times a week without ever needing to buy a ball! The intervening hedges between the proposed ‘golf

practice’ field and the public areas are a lot longer than two house widths. No fence or trees will stop miss hit balls. You may think that a child or adult or horse, are small targets but horses, being herd animals, tend to stay together. A golf ball landing amongst them would create a stampede of terrified horses which could cause serious injury to themselves, anyone in their way and damage to nearby property. If you still feel unsure about how far a miss hit golf ball can travel, take a walk to the Golf Club 1st tee and look how far away the roofs are of the houses half way down the fairway. However, I do recognise that the Golf Club needs a

practice area and suggest that they purchase the top field (further along Guisborough Road). This is isolated from the walking public and horses on three sides. All right, it is not long enough for long iron practice, but, as we all know, during a round of golf the driver/long irons are used less frequently than the other clubs. Come on Mr Golf Professional, this could be an opportunity to design a testing practice area for medium/short shots, recovery play, bunker shots and putting. The hard graft of practicing short shots should have satisfying rewards. Prize winning golfers are experts at the short game. There are already 3 driving ranges within our locality, one only 2 miles away. The Golf Club is a business and needs, at least, an income

large enough to cover costs. I feel sure that non-members of the Club will have to pay to use the practice facilities. Since there is no other area in Saltburn to practice it is essential that all residents of Saltburn be allowed to use the practice ground free of charge. I hope the Golf Club revises their plans. Golf can be a

dangerous game and the current proposal has the general public in the firing range.
