unk Sandwiches bashed its way into Portland’s food scene in 2008, when former Meriwether’s
chefs Tommy Habetz and Nick Wood set up shop on SE Morrison. By the time a second bar location popped up, inner Southeast had become the place to go for top-quality sandwiches. (Bunk got an assist on that front from the nearby—and also excellent— Meat Cheese Bread.) And while critical plaudits soon followed, Habetz says, “This is the fi rst time we’ve ever won a readers’ poll. We’ve gotten food critics that dug our sandwiches, but it’s really more important that everybody else like it.” It’s pretty hard not to like Bunk’s sandwiches. A
top-notch pork belly banh mi rotates through the menu occasionally, while purists can’t miss with a cold sandwich of Italian cured meats and pickled peppers. And though vegetarian options aren’t plentiful, they are thoughtful: A recent sandwich of roasted aspara- gus, ricotta, and green salsa was fresh, original, and easily one of the best vegetarian sandwich offerings around. As Habetz puts it, “We’re just trying to make the most delicious sandwiches we can, the way we would want them ourselves.” Amen. ★
