The Savannah Signal Final Issue 2011 TICA Annual

2010 By Brigitte Cowell

TICA‘s Annual cat shows are always big and exciting, people come from all over the world to this show and generally the entries are higher than any other show. This recent Annual in Santa Clara put on by my cat club, Jazzy Cats, was no different. It spanned two exhibi- tion halls in the Santa Clara Exhibition Center and I knew to wear comfy shoes as I would be doing many miles running to rings and about the place all weekend. I even bought a pedometer as I thought it would be cool to see just how many miles I‘d walk, but I was so busy I forgot to attach it to myself!

This show was also a Savannah-Rama, an exhibition of our new breed designed to present multiple gen- erations of Savannahs (we had from F1 through F6 there) and have many breeders and pet owners pre- sent to be able to answer all the questions of spectators that come to the show to learn more about cat breeds. We have poster boards full of additional pictures, as well as a poster itemizing the reasons some- one would not want to have a Serval as pet and what makes the Savannah a better choice. We have handouts of this as well as general breed information.

Setting up such an area is a lot of labor, we had been given a separate space to make a splashy breed display. I had ordered a huge yellow banner with ―Savannahs‖ printed on it to have hanged over the area, this made it so easy for everyone to find us! I arrived on Wednesday to help with show setup, Kristine Alessio came Thursday and then MaryJo Morrison kindly joined us Friday to keep us organized and make sure everything was perfect. We went through over 50 yards of black fabric to drape the tables and make the area cohesive! Fire escape rules made it a challenge to work out how to arrange the tables to make it easy for ―traffic‖ to flow and see all the cats easily. Two ad- ditional pet owners, Nancy Heacox and Nikki LaCrosse, deserve special mention for fly- ing up from Southern California simply to lend a hand, their help was well-appreciated!
