several personal losses for me. My mother-in- law passed away, as did a friend’s daughter. Both provided a variety of emotions and responses, but each offered a glimpse into the lives of those individuals, their families and the commu- nities in which they were

involved. They got me thinking about friend- ships and communities here at MAC. It was interesting as to who reached out
or showed up during those times. My wife had friends from Germany, Seattle and Washington, D.C. all make their way to Philadelphia to support their friend and pay their respects; while many members of my father-in-law’s high school class, some of whom he hadn’t seen in years, called and came to the memorial service too. Others associated with my mother-in-law’s volunteer efforts for the Multiple Sclerosis Society were present as well. Each of these groups of individuals was connected in some way to a common commu- nity. A community into which they each gave and received through the years. MAC has a diversity of communities that
offer the opportunity for such support. Like a good workout, however, such support is not free. It requires effort and input over time to receive the benefit. As one blog I recently read regarding how to get more out of social media simply stated, “Support the community and the community will support you.” As I reflected on that statement, I realized my wife had flown or driven to Philadelphia from various parts of the U.S. for similar memorials for each of the individuals who had come to town to support her. MAC’s unique communities continually show the same type of support, which is often provided by those who have received it as well. The support can take the form of fans at a tournament, regular workout partners or something greater; but it requires the reciprocal action to maximize its benefit…“support the community and the community will support you.” I look forward to seeing you supporting a
community here at MAC this month and in the future. WM
