lmost 100 members competed in the three-week 2011 Spring Decathlon, which ended in late May. Joaquin Romera was the winner in the men’s division for the fourth year in a row. First-time participant Kelsey Bowen won the women’s division. Romera, who competes in the 35 to 39 age group, edged out Phillip Barry, with both men being the only two partici- pants to break 9,000 points. Romera had the top score of all participants in the 1000-meter row, the 100-meter dash, the 2000-meter row, the 200-yard swim, the vertical leap and the 50-yard swim, while Barry had the top score in the bench press and shot put. Both Romera and Barry set age-group records for their total overall score. Rounding out the top ten finishers (in order) were Matt Presjak, Ian Crawford, Daemon Anastas, Ryan Buller, Max Doblie, Peter Marks, Mike Cook and Mike Bussey.

group, had the top score in the 100-meter dash, the 200-yard swim, the 400-meter dash, the 50-yard swim and the mile run. Amy Risch finished second, and was a top-three finisher in five events.


The committee encourages first-time participants for the Fall Decathlon, which kicks off in early November.


The remaining top finishers (in order) were Lynn Mesher, Candy Puterbaugh, Lyndsay Finn, Linsey Wismer, Elise Orban, Marisa Hernandez, Sharon Foley and Britt Weiler. In the men’s staff division, Brian


Karsten took top honors with the top score in six events, followed by Monty Button and Ian Gould. In the woman’s staff division, Darcie Gardner had the top overall score and won five events. Kayley Oka and Angela Knight followed Gardner. The two-day Ironman competition


was held at the conclusion of the Spring Decathlon. Romera edged out Daemon Anastas for the top score. Other top finishers included Ben Cornett, David Harding, Dunbar Carpenter, Scott Taylor and Larry Brown. Alyson O’Brien won the woman’s division, with Amy Colville finishing second. Romera was awarded the prestigious Bud Lewis Award. Anne Lazar, partici- pating in her first decathlon, won the Doreen Morris Award. The Fall Team Decathlon starts in

early November, and is a good tuneup for the Spring Decathlon. All participants are welcome in both the Spring Decathlon and the Fall Team Decathlon, regard- less of experience or skill levels.
