Pilates — It Started With a Regular Joe


his is how Joe Pilates did this exer- cise. That’s something MAC Pilates students often hear from instructors as they roll up, down and over. Really? There was a Joe Pilates?


T Indeed. There was even a Mrs. Joe Pilates,


aka Clara, who joined Joe in his passion for what came to be known as the Pilates Method of exercise. During his life, Joe Pilates became a


living testament to the value of his branded method of exercise. Born in Germany in 1880, he spent his early years small and frail, and suffered from a variety of maladies including asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever – all of which he vowed to overcome as he grew. Using an old anatomy book, he studied the parts of the body and memorized how each moved; he also watched how animals moved, and studied Eastern and Western forms of exercise. It paid off quickly. By the time he was 14, he was modeling for anatomy charts. By his late teens, he had become an accomplished skin diver, gymnast and skier. Joe Pilates perfected the Pilates Method


as he worked in Europe with injured World War I soldiers, and ultimately in the U.S. at his own studio with dancers, including Martha Graham and George Balanchine, and with athletes. His repertoire came to include a series of more than 500 revolutionary and evolutionary exercises that melded ancient Greek, Roman and Eastern disciplines with Western understanding of anatomy and physiology. The focus was on efficiency of movement resulting in enhanced performance and reduced risk of injury in other activities. The MAC Pilates program remains true


to this time-tested exercise discipline. The MAC’s program is tailored to the needs of the club’s diverse membership – including those rehabilitating after physical therapy, competi- tive athletes seeking an edge, and everyday athletes wanting to keep body and mind primed for the long haul. Contemporary in its approach, the MAC


program also maintains the integrity of Joe Pilates’ belief in working smarter but not harder – a philosophy we can all embrace. So, when an instructor says, “This is how Joe Pilates did this exercise,” it is wise to listen and follow.
