BEST BET: Country STEVE EARLE

AND THE DUKES Intersection, Grand Rapids Aug. 2, 7 p.m. $27 in advance, $30 day of show sectionlive.com, (616) 451-8232

THOUGH HE WAS DEFINED as a Texas country musi- cian early on in his career, singer-songwriter Steve Earle has since implemented elements of rock, bluegrass, rockabilly and (especially) folk into his twangy jams. His musical talent extends to the mandolin, banjo, bass and even the bouzouki, though he’s better known for his rhythmic guitar, harmonica riffs and hearty vocals. Earle has collaborated with the likes of Country/Folk legend Townes Van Zandt, guitar genius Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, The Rolling Stones, and Queen of Punk Patti Smith. He is currently touring with his wife, alt-country singer-

songwriter Allison Moorer, who plays guitar and provides some vocals, and their backing band the Dukes. Earle has received 14 Grammy Award nominations, including a win for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 2005 and awards for Best Contemporary Folk/Americana Album that he received in 2008 and again in 2010. Rolling Stone named him the Country Artist of the Year in 1986 and placed his album Guitar Town at No. 489 on their list of the Top 500 Albums of All Time. Plus, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award for songwriting from the BBC in 2004. Not too shabby, Earle. Reported by Matthew Sullivan
