AFTER BEING SOUGHT OUT by Kurt Cobain to perform with Nirvana on Unplugged in New York, The Meat Puppets finally got a bit of what the “cow punk” band deserved – recognition. MTV’s Unplugged session put both bands on the stage, playing live acoustic versions of three original Meat Puppet tunes, “Plateau,” “Oh, Me,” and most notably the gut- wrenching “Lake of Fire.” That guest spot summoned the Phoenix-based band from the underground and onto MTV. The Meat Puppets’ 1994 album Too High to Die quickly followed, as did the hit single “Backwater,” and the band sold more copies than all of its previous albums combined. The Meat Puppets’ story started long before the grunge epidemic of the ‘90s. Formed in 1980 by the band’s primary songwriter, Curt Kirkwood

(vocals/guitar) and his brother Cris Kirkwood (bass), the band has went through a string of drummers and just as many style changes. After putting out a number of records with SST – a label also known for birthing Hüsker Dü and the Minutemen – in the ‘80s, The Meat Puppets stood out and quickly tran- scended from its impetuous punk roots into trippy, more melodic territories. Mixing country with punk, the band was a precursor to the alt-country movement and influenced everyone from Beck, Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh,

and of course, the late Kurt Cobain. While Cris Kirkwood’s heroin addiction hindered the band for almost a decade, even causing a few long hiatuses, he’s now clean, and has been touring successfully for a couple years. The band is now on tour promoting its 13th album, Lollipop. Reported by Rich Tupica
