Do the Big Bay Shuffle

| by Nick Manes M

ANY A TALENTED PER- FORMER has split their time between acting and music. From Elvis Presley’s manufactured films

of the late 1950s, to Eminem’s raw, pseudo- biographical film 8 Mile, the actor/musician line has been blurred since nearly the begin- ning of time. However, what may very

well separate Jeff Daniels from the rest of the pack is his pas- sion for the style of music he performs. One of Michigan’s favorite native sons is known for his diverse work in movies such as Dumb and Dumber, The Squid and the Whale, as well as being the voice talent behind many of the Pure Michigan advertisements sanctioned by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Daniels bought his first guitar at the Herb

David Guitar Studio in Ann Arbor in 1976 and says he has since then been “interested in finger-picking acoustic blues.” Aside from his numerous acting credits and starting the Purple Rose Theatre in Chelsea, Daniels has released five solo records and toured extensively. “I’ve been on the road for 10 years,”

Daniels says. He’s been on the road so much that be-

tween August and early December 2010, he did close to 75 gigs and put 10,000 miles on his tour bus. “I had a ball,” he says. While on something of a break for the

moment, Daniels will be going back out on the road in August for an seven- date Michigan tour, which will include a stop in Grand Rapids at Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. In spite of his heavy

touring, Daniels, 56, isn’t turning away from acting. He continues to contribute work to the Purple Rose and has

recently appeared in the Broadway play God of Carnage with Marcia Gay Harden and James Gandolfini. Daniels is also currently shooting an HBO pilot done by Aaron Sorkin, whose most recent accomplishment was writing the screenplay for The Social Network. “It’s kind of a behind the scenes of a cable

news network,” Daniels says. Be sure to catch Daniels’ show at Frederik

Meijer Gardens on Aug. 21, which will include one of Daniels’ favorite moments, the Big Bay Shuffle. “I get the whole audience going with this drunken dance. It could be the state song.” n
