HEALTH BEAT DYING WISH

Waiting for Baby Olivia Connie had been her children’s hero. They

say she was a combination of strong, stubborn and very sweet. The woman who deeply loved caring for her garden and her animals was most passionate about her grandkids. She “enjoyed life as it came to her,” they say, and that’s why she held on for baby Olivia to arrive. It was a tenuous wait, however. Connie was

extremely frail, and failing quickly. In fact, the night before the scheduled induction of labor, caregivers and family members alike were sure Connie would pass away. “The family was there to say their last

goodbyes and I was angry,” says Suzie. “Angry that she wouldn’t be there, that she was not provided the opportunity to hold my baby. Still, I had hope; hope that she had made it this far and she couldn’t give up on me, the baby and the family just yet.” That rough weekend passed with Suzie

and her brothers taking turns sleeping next to their mother and holding her hand. On Monday morning, Suzie was glad to find her still breathing, kissed her hand and cheeks, and left to be admitted to the Birth Place where Baby Olivia would enter the world. Despite her weakened state and the effect of major pain medications, Connie awoke acutely aware that this was the day she had waited for. Debbie accompanied Connie from the

seventh floor to her new private room at the Birth Place, stopping at Suzie’s delivery room where staff pushed the two women’s beds together. “I love you,” they said to each other as they clasped hands. “Hurry up and have that baby,” Connie urged.

Then she was moved to her room next door to receive blood transfusions while rousing only to get periodic updates on the labor.
