A full bus of Pelham Seniors enjoyed a comfortable ride to the NH coast on their road trip held on Monday, July 18

by Marc Ayotte On Monday, July 18, the Pelham Senior Citizens’ bus was packed to the gills, as 17 seniors broke out of their shell and embarked on a friendly excursion to Brown’s Restaurant and Markey’s Lobster Pound, both in Seabrook, NH. Accompanied by the new Senior Facility Director, Sara Landry, and part-time secretary Dawn Danevich, the seniors got off to a delayed start, but it did not dampen the anticipation and enthusiasm of hitting the coast for some delicious seafood. Many of those making the trip, like Senior Center and also part-time secretary Ed Richard, were looking forward to delving into steamers and lobster while others were going just for the halibut! The seniors had a wonderful time and, thanks to the ‘senior bus’ driving talents of Bill Janocha, all arrived back to the center safe, sound, and with full bellies. This trip was just one of many ways the Pelham seniors enjoy what their facility has to offer.

Te Pelham Seniors’ bus leaves the Center. Final destination—a seafood feast at Brown’s Restaurant in Seabrook, NH

of ‘Casablanca by the Sea’—an event that started with a luxury motor coach trip to Portland, ME. Upon arriving in Portland, those that took part in the day of fun enjoyed lunch at the Dunstan School House Buffet, a 90-minute narrated cruise on the waters of Casco Bay, and shopping time down in the Old Port. But the seniors need not travel afar to have a good time, as the Pelham facility has lots of action going on right at home. With the new edition to the center being completed just this past spring, Facility Director Sara Landry is excited about all the new events and activities that will be taking place. Landry brings to Pelham years of experience in activities for seniors from her days in Londonderry, where she founded and ran that facility for nine years. As part of continuing the entertainment now available to the senior members, Landry hopes to have line dancing in the new edition along with yoga sessions, which she said was very big in Londonderry. Additionally, as a result of a generous donation of an LCD big-screen TV, there are plans to obtain a

center. Whether it’s Wednesday Whisk, which draws a pretty good crowd, according to Landry, or Friday afternoon Bingo, there’s usually something going on to please everyone. Between the combined financial support of the town of Pelham and the Council on Aging, the Pelham Senior Facility has become quite the happening little place. Members have access to and operate what they call the Penny Pincher, which is a thrift store of sorts, selling clothing and other assorted items. The store is open to the public daily from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and all the proceeds from the Penny Pincher as well as money received from book sales inside the center are donated to the Council on Aging. On Tuesdays through Fridays, the senior van is

in operation, shuttling members to and from their homes and the center. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, Hannaford Supermarket donates pastries to the center and they are free for the taking by the members.

If you want to enjoy a casual,

friendly lunch, this is the place to come. Every Tuesday through Friday, the seniors, for a mere $2, can enjoy a meal provided by St. Joseph Community Services of Merrimack. To whet your appetite, some of the upcoming meals include roast turkey with gravy and a chicken broccoli salad.

Concerts on the Village Green Kick Off

continue every Wednesday until the end of August. Food and drinks are usually available for purchase for those who wish to quench their thirst and whet their appetites.

“Just another day at the office…”

So that you can be sure of walking around the grounds comfortably, the senior facility holds a foot clinic once a month on Mondays. The clinics are sponsored by Home Health VNA of Nashua, with the next one taking place on July 25. The Senior Facility also conducts a diabetic shoe clinic, put on by EZ Diabetic Supplies out of Bath, ME. The company sends representatives to the Center who assist the seniors in determining whether they qualify for Medicare coverage in obtaining specially designed shoes for those individuals suffering from diabetes. Stop in July 25 for the next clinic to see if you qualify for coverage and possibly get some new comfortable ‘dancing shoes’ in preparation for the Luau Dance scheduled to be held on August 29. If you are age 55 or older and a Pelham resident, an annual fee of only $7 will make you eligible for all the Center offers. Even other community residents are welcome to join the Pelham Senior Center for a slightly higher fee of $10 per year. Stop in and check out the Facility, enjoy what they have to offer, and possibly meet a new friend. And don’t forget to sign up for the trip to Foxwoods slated for Monday, August 15. For more information, please call the Senior Center at 635-3800.
