light mass and rear-wheel drive confi guration, it probably is not needed. To make matters worse, there are 4,7 turns of the steering wheel from lock to lock, which could have been reduced to enhance both cornering and ease of parking. The steering feel is light, but a sense of vagueness only intrudes when driving in a straight line. When bombing along in fi fth gear, the Gran Max’s windscreen wiper stalk is obscured – that’s not normally a hassle but for the fact that there is no intermittent wipe action, so you might have to do quite a bit of fi ddling with the stalk in soft drizzle conditions. Crosswinds do affect the Gran

Max, but the steering, although light, is largely unaffected by fuller loads. Under load the leaf sprung

suspension remains fi rm, but the rear-end is naturally more compliant over bumps. The shock absorbers still do their job well and don’t bounce. The 13-inch tyres do require extra air pressure for bigger loads, but the task of loading is easy thanks to the drop sides. Having said that, the omission of tie down points on the load fl oor means that a 500 kg mass can move around a lot and damage the bulkhead. Once the rear tailgate has been unlatched, the sides can also be dropped. Three hinges at the rear are better than two and loading

from any approach couldn’t be any simpler. Mechanical and noise levels are expectedly high, but road noise not so. A full-size spare wheel with the jack inside hangs under the body and is padlocked for safety, but other tools reside in the glove box.

TEST SUMMARY The pros of this vehicle far outweigh the cons and it is fully deserving of consideration if you are looking for a tough, economical pick-up capable of hauling a ton of goods around in a hurry.
