Single-cab GWM’s one of the original Chinese brands to infiltrate the South African market and after just four years on the local front has branched out from LCVs into passenger cars and SUVs. CAR tested a double-cab MPI in June 2007 and our initial thoughts were (and still are) that it represented strong value for the price. There’s quite an impressive line-up for a workhorse bakkie too. The engine range is similar to Foton, with a 2,2-litre petrol unit (78 kW at 4 600 r/min, 190 N.m at 2 400 r/min) and a 2,8-litre turbodiesel engine (70 kW at 3 600 r/min, 225 N.m at 1 800 r/min). On the plus side, build quality seems quite good, and there are also 4x4 models available. We haven’t heard too many complaints. The warranty is a fairly short 2 years/60 000 km one on the single-cab models but is extendable.

Steeds get a three-years/100 000 km warranty that can be extended, and a service plan is optional. Of the Chinese marques, GWM is probably the best established in SA.

JMC BD We have had very limited exposure to this brand and there are no petrol models in the company’s BD range of pick-ups either. The four-cylinder 2,8-litre turbodiesel engine produces 83 kW at 3 600 r/min and 235 N.m of torque at 2 300 r/min. Specification and pricing seem good, but perhaps those most willing to explore Eastern alternatives will be put off by a dealer network that consists of only 9 outlets.
