commuter town located within the borough of Tandridge. The population of Caterham in 2010 was estimated to be 21,000 and the town is forecast to grow by 6.4% between 2010 and 2020. The catchment population has a strong demographic with 71% classified as ABC1. The population is affluent with 39% of the population represented by secure families and wealthy executives. Church Walk Shopping Centre is
located in the heart of Caterham town centre, directly opposite the mainline train station into London Victoria and Caterham Seven sports car showroom which the town is renowned for manufacturing. The 75,000sqft centre opened in 1988 and is fully let with 27 retail unit. The 350 space free multi story car
et
park provides the main car parking in Caterham town centre. Centre Manager, Shelley Filippi, joined Cushman Wakefield LLP August 2006 And runs this busy neighborhood centre single handedly, building strong links with the local community. Her energy and enthusiasm has produced strong results and personal acclaim for Miss Filippi – she was shortlisted in 2009 for the SCEPTRE Awards Marketing Manager of the year, runner up for Manager of the year for a small Centre in 2010 and winner for Manager of the Year of a small Centre in 2011. Commented on the news of the
award Miss Filippi stated, “This is absolutely fantastic news it would not have been possible to be shortlisted without the hard work of the onsite team and the response of our customers and tenants to the events I have created over the years. As well as initiating projects
ranging from Medieval Day, Caterham
which won the Environment and Culture category of the South East Action for Market Towns Awards. Shabby to Smart began with a
town Healthcheck in 2006 that consulted over 2,000 people. One of the responses to come out of this Healthcheck was: “Shabby to Smart“. This neatly expressed the town’s aspiration to position itself closer to neighbouring Surrey towns, both in visual appeal and in the quality of its amenities. Visually the project has exceeded expectations and the volunteer group has earned respect and credibility within the town and from the local government and service providers involved. Other projects have come out of this
Arts Festival and school recycling programmes, Miss Filippi has set up the website
www.churchwalkcaterham. com which links through to the Centre’s Facebook page where you can view past photographs and press coverage. “I have worked for four shopping
Centres”, says Miss Filippi, “and the community spirit in Caterham is by far the best” Last year Caterham won the Market
Towns South East award for the Best Community and Social Event. We are delighted to say that other towns are now following Caterham’s example by holding similar events. These events are only possible through the excellent work done by a small committee of volunteers. Another success is the “ABC A Better Caterham, Shabby to Smart project”
core project, helping to build a strong community team that has brought the town a festival, a business-to-business exhibition, a music event, a food festival and related ideas such as a community radio station. The future looks bright for Caterham and the onsite management team: Miss Filippi has recently won a scholarship to The Oxford Retail Masters Forum where her “Lions Den” project won first place and she has also become the first centre manager in the country to become a trained assessor for Keep Britain Tidy.
