NE Success Stories

Nicolle Thompson spoke to Ammar Mirza about his amazing success in the world of business.

A

mmar Mirza is a man on a mission that would put Superman to shame. His hugely successful business, Ammar M, off ers business services to a whole host of companies and entrepreneurs,

all tailored to each individual customer’s needs; he is Secretary General of Asian Business Connexions (ABC) and even fi nds time to co-host a radio show on Spice FM! Clark Kent eat your heart out. So, fi rstly to Ammar M - a company which can deal with almost anything, as they say, “to do with property or business and everything in-between”. They have maintenance, construction and property management divisions, alllowing them to off er customers a one-stop-shop for all their property requirements. They can help everybody from multi- national organisations through to private customers. Their interior design service has already seen

them furnish thousands of properties and they are accredited by the Federation of Master Builders. This, combined with their building services, means they can off er full project and insurance claim management, working with all reputable insurance companies and appointed loss adjusters. The business consultancy arm of the business has seen them work with a variety of companies from sole-traders to multi-nationals, including McDonalds, MNX Security and Vision Energy. Services delivered range from website design and development through to business, market, fi nancial and sales planning and deployment. The range of marketing services includes print, radio and TV - if you can see or hear it, they can make it work for you. You may wonder how Ammar manages to fi nd

time to do anything else with all this going on, but he is passionate about both his home region of the

North East and about helping those starting out in the business world. He was one of the founding members of ABC - a membership organisation set up to connect, support and promote the Asian and wider business community. Members have access to a whole range of benefi ts as well as potential funding. There is a greater perecentage of self-employment in ethnic households than other groups, yet these entrepreneurs often fi nd it diffi cult to fi nd their place in the larger business arena. Many fi nd it hard to get the support they need and to fi nd their voice. This is why ABC was set up. A network of support has been established and a number of high profi le fi gures have come on board to add to the organisation’s infl uence. Since its launch, 87 new businesses have been established, providing hundreds of jobs. All this without any outside funding. Nor does ABC limit itself in its scope of those it

will help; no matter what your background, race or religion - they will aim to help anybody they can. They can off er guidance on best practice and legislation through to training and development. If they cannot help you directly, they can put you in touch with somebody who can. They have connections with local authorities, Business Link and UKTI as well as regularly lobbying parliament in their members’ interests. Having managed a call centre before moving on

to become head of IT service delivery for a national communications company, Ammar is certainly not scared of responsibility! He even used this time to gain a host of qualifi cations in IT, project & programme management and customer service. His background allows him to off er customers advice that is based on experience as well as in-depth knowledge and he is a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership and Management. Yet his hard work does not end there. In addition to everything else he off ers, Ammar is also on the board of Your Homes Newcastle, he is a primary school chair of governors, a representative on Newcastle Council’s strategic partnership and, of course, co-host of a popular business show on Spice FM. Oh, and he is also a company director of a number of other companies..... and he is building a house in Darras Hall... and he regularly raises and donates money to charity... and he is a board member of Marie Curie Hospice as well as being a patron of the Charlie Bear for Cancer Care charity! His dedication was recognised when he

was recently shortlisted as a “Shining Light for Enterprising Excellence” fi nalist in the Newcastle Enterprise Awards. Personally, I’m thinking not before time. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? L
