Option 2: Support for Fellowships Up to £15,000
The IAS attracts some of the most distinguished scholars, artists and public intellectuals to Durham every year. 20 Fellows arrive at the Institute for three month periods to participate in the Institute’s annual theme, engaging with the academic and research postgraduate communities on research projects, and delivering public lectures and seminars for the North-East public. £15,000 will cover a Fellow’s stipend, buy-out costs and all their travel expenses, allowing us to recruit the most prominent and gifted individuals. Fellowships can be named by the donor if they wish, and sponsorship can be targeted towards a specific type of Fellow, for example a junior or senior researcher, an individual from the global south, or someone from a non-academic background such as an artist or public intellectual. Support for these Fellowships is essential to the future success of the IAS.
Option 3: Support for public engagement activities £25,000
The IAS is very keen to stage an annual high profile event in Durham, that is open to the general public, and which attracts influential thinkers, policy makers and practioners to debate a topical and important subject - in most cases relevant to the Institute’s annual theme - that will be covered in the quality press. Events in the past have included the ‘On Being Human’ project that included a three-week exhibition of South African sculptor, Jane Alexander’s work in Durham Cathedral accompanied by a public debate on what it means to be human in the 21st Century. The Institute would like to stage a high-profile public event every year as a way of raising the profile of Durham University, highlighting nationally and internationally its research strengths, and engaging an interested North-East public in debates on the very latest research that are rarely held in this area.
In addition, the Institute wishes to build on its recent success of the publication of the book Thinking About Almost Everything (Profile Books, 2009). The book, edited by two leading academics of the University who are both Directors of Durham's Institute of Advanced Study, communicates authoritative thinking on a wide spectrum of topics of public interest in a lively, open and accessible manner. It has just entered its second print run and will shortly be released in the US and Canada. Profile Books now wish to engage with the IAS to publish further books of this type on the annual themes of the Institute, such as ‘Being Human’ and ‘Water’.
A donation of £25,000 will enable the IAS to organise a high- profile public event based on its annual theme or will enable the IAS to employ a part-time research assistant to help the Directors produce the next ‘Thinking About’ book.
