Housing issues on council agenda Bottled water drive, Project Connect updates
Helping families buy or rent homes was part of recent actions by the Chandler City Council.
Action items included approval of a First Time Homebuyer program for Chandler families using $692,447 from the Neighborhood Stabilization Program 3 funds, and implementation of an affordable rental housing program through an agreement between the Affordable Rental Movement of Save the Family and the city, again using funds from the Neighborhood Stabilization Program 3 in the amount of $419,643. In addition, Council adopted the 2011-12 property tax levy, which places the total tax rate of $1.2714 per $100 of assessed valuation.
In other action, an amendment to the current Memorandum of Understanding with Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 5, for fi scal year 2011-12 through FY 12012-13, was authorized.
Helping out
City of Chandler employees are conducting a bottled water drive to assist those in need this summer. Mayor Jay Tibshraeny said he will be donating several cases and invited the members of the Council to do the same.

Grades 7 and 8 will be housed at the old Chandler Traditional Junior High campus, west of Arizona Avenue and north of Chandler Boulevard, while grades nine through 12 will be located at the Erie campus.

Tibshraeny noted that volunteers are also needed for the Project Connect homeless event on Thu., July 21 at Chandler Christian Church. The event offers access to resources that homeless people need to get back to healthy, fi nancially stable lives. Services at the event include medical care, showers, haircuts, clothing, meals, bicycle repair, counseling, substance abuse services, employment services and foreclosure prevention information. Volunteers are needed to work morning and afternoon shifts from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information visit

Congratulations, proclamations Capping the meeting, Tibshraeny congratulated Vice Mayor Trinity Donovan as the newly appointed chair of Valley Metro Regional Transportation Authority’s Budget and Finance subcommittee. Additionally, the Mayor recognized Councilmember Kevin Hartke for his appointment as vice chair of the Continuum of Care Regional Committee on Homelessness for the Maricopa Association of Governments, as well as acknowledging
Councilmember Rick Heumann, who is named secretary/treasurer to the Arizona Municipal Water Users Association.
The recent groundbreaking ceremony for ICAN earned congratulations for its new facility located at Folley Park. During the City Council’s June Study Session, the City’s Administrative Librarian Phyllis Saunders and Fire Engineer Alfredo Garcia were recognized for 15 and 20 years of work respectively.
Acknowledgement is extended to the Chandler Police Department’s Forensic Service Section recent International Accreditation in the fi eld of Forensic Science Testing.
Tibshraeny proclaimed July as National Parks and Recreation month and the week of July 10 through 16 as Therapeutic Recreation Week. Dean Visser, Parks and Recreation board chairman, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the group.
