ZEBRA TOAST: “Stepping Out” is the name of Alice Van Overstraeten’s pastel painting of a zebra that accompanies the recipe for Zebra Toast in “My Zoo Cookbook.”


“I let the subject matter talk to me, and it guides my hand,” she explains. “I love color, and you will see it in all my work.” She assists a number of organizations with fundraising efforts, painting at the annual Phoenix Zoo Paint Out, the annual spring Paint Out at the Desert Botanical Gardens and creating a large 5-foot by 7-foot landscape oil painting for Neighbors Who Care to honor levels of charitable giving. She was one of 15 artists chosen for a Chandler Arts Commission public art project to paint a lifesized fiberglass ostrich, sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank that she named “Butterfi eld.” She has shown her work at Scottsdale’s School of Art, Gammage Auditorium at ASU, Sedona Chamber of Commerce, the former Art on Boston Gallery

Van Overstraeten accepts commissions and has her paintings hanging in offices, shops and private homes in Arizona, Australia, Canada, Belgium and Mexico including in Remnant Health Center, Grand Canyon Family Medicine, Apex Chiropractic, Zepher Internet Café and Country Cottage Café.


A graduate of Albion College, she taught school in Royal Oak, Birmingham and Detroit and currently teaches a year-round watercolor class at the Sun Lakes Country Club, plus pastel, watercolor and mixed media in Sun Lakes, Chandler, Gilbert and Tempe from September to May.


“My Zoo Cookbook” and “My Zoo Artbook” are available locally at di Sciacca Glass in downtown Chandler, two plates full in Scottsdale and at the third Friday Downtown Chandler Art Walks, where Van Overstraeten will also autograph the books.
