Adi Modi - restaurant pioneer

The untimely death of Adi Modi, director of the prestigious Taj Hotels group and the driving force behind the trail-blaz- ing Bombay Brasserie restaurant, has come as a huge shock to the industry. Adi Modi leaves behind a great legacy as a true pioneer of authentic Indian cuisine.

Brought to London in 1982 by the Taj Group, having managed some of Taj’s deluxe five star hotels, Adi supervised the successful opening of Bombay Brasserie in London’s Gloucester Road. Admired by many for his forward thinking, he brought quality Indian food into the realm of fine dining. His success can clearly be seen by the fact

that the restaurant has remained fully booked for just under 30 years. Adi dared to challenge what was the con- ventional way of thinking in the curry sector, and many Indian restaurateurs credit his influence for making spice cuisine what it is in Britain today.

Arun Harnal, Bombay Brasserie’s director of operations comments: “Adi will be hugely missed. He was an incredible and humble man with a true passion for Indian food. His contribu- tion to Indian restaurants and hotels will always be widely acknowledged and appreciated.”

Alhaj Kamar Uddin

It is with great sadness that Spice Business has learned of the death of Alhaj Mohmamed Kamar Uddin, owner of Romna Gate, one of the oldest res- taurants in in Southgate, London, as well as KS Enterprise, a money transfer business and Rahman Travels. He was also president of the UK Bangladesh National Party for Bangladeshi nation- als (BNPUK).

Originally from Beanibazar, Sylhet, Bangladesh, he passed away on 22 April 2011 at the age of 63. Janaza was held in Birmingham Central Mosque, the London Muslim Centre and New Palton BNP Headquarters, Dhaka.

The community has lost a great, irre- placeable leader, who was always pre- pared to take a stand. He will be sorely missed by the Bangladeshi community as a whole, as well as his party.
