loudspeakers, which have been mounted on the walls in order to provide an immersive sound effect throughout the seating area. Each HMS-10 surround sound loudspeaker is individually addressable, meaning together they can accommodate different surround formats. They also introduce a new dimension of flexibility to the system, as they allow the cinema to be able to cater for a variety of multi-media events in an effortless fashion. The entire system is optimised using a Galileo loudspeaker management system with a Galileo 616 processor and Compass control software. Precise time calculations provided by the Galileo system ensure a transparent audio transition between the loudspeakers and retain the overall sonic focus in the theatre area. The system is calibrated using a SIM 3 audio analyser. Dave gave some more details on the system configuration: “The configuration is left / centre / right, left surround, right surround, left rear surround, right rear surround, with low frequency effects (LFE). The system set-up was the Dolby 7.1 standard. It’s a very strict commitment with very little room for variance. “One thing Meyer Sound is best known for is the ability to best tailor the LFE frequency response for the listening area. With proper speaker placement and refined calibration, the LFE is minimised near the walls and optimised for the seats. This may seem simple enough but Meyer Sound was the first to initiate this technique and it’s proven to be extremely successful.” Dave said of the equipment choice: “The most common response I get when a client hears the Acheron for the first time is how clear and well-defined the dialogue is and how deep and rich the music comes across.” Kinoton Korea supplied and integrated the Meyer Sound equipment for the Megabox KINTEX project. Kinoton’s Brooke Lee described how the cinema market in Korea is changing and the importance of using high quality technology. “The film exhibition market in Korea is fast-growing and extremely competitive. The dynamic power and accuracy of EXP proved a perfect match for the upscale ‘M’ concept, which features luxury seating, a 19 metre wide screen, and Sony 4K digital projection,” she said. According to Kinoton Korea’s Chris Bae, the aggressive growth of Korean cinema operators points toward more premium screen installations with Meyer Sound EXP systems. “EXP systems have a power and clarity that greatly enhances the audience experience, and that sells tickets,” explained Bae. “In addition, the self-powered Meyer Sound loudspeakers have much lower maintenance costs, which is also very appealing to the operators.” Considering this was the first installation of the EXP system in Asia, the project ran quite smoothly. The key to the efficient transition was good planning, the tuning process running according to plan, and

there not being a need for speaker re-positioning or routing. Another aspect that made the installation interesting was the eagerness of the KINTEX technicians. They were excited and proud to be working on the project and were keen to see it completed correctly. Their commitment to genuinely making this cinema the best it could be was very apparent. Summing up, Dave said: “The result is a beautiful reference cinema where moviegoers can sit and enjoy a powerful show and can rest assured that they’re is listening to the precise intentions of the producers and mixing engineers.”
