In the final quarter of 2010, Meyer Sound announced a new designation for cinema sound systems. From December 2010, the cinema line formerly known as Cinema Experience was renamed EXP. Under this banner are systems designed to meet the rigorous standard for the motion picture exhibition and post-production markets. “In step with digital projection and 3D presentations, Meyer Sound’s EXP cinema systems are redefining the movie-going experience,” said John Meyer, CEO and co-founder of Meyer Sound. “The audience’s experience of immediacy and total immersion is dramatically heightened by the power and precise detail of EXP.” A number of cinema installations took place with the new EXP system, however, it wasn’t until April 2011 that EXP made its debut in the Asian market. The ‘M’ screen at the new Megabox KINTEX complex is the home of the first EXP cinema system in Asia. Meyer Sound initially contacted consultant Dave Dennison. He said: “I was originally contracted by Meyer Sound last summer to take a look at the venue and create the best sound design for the room.” Dave had already completed a number of cinema designs, and he allowed that experience to guide him through this project for the 200-seat auditorium.
The system was required to provide smooth and even coverage, with sufficient power capability and an SPL variance of no more than 3dB (A-weighted) average throughout the entire seating area of each cinema. It was also important from a visitor’s point of view that the sound system was able to convey articulate, natural sounding speech, and at the same time produce good quality music reproduction. These were all components, which had to be considered during the design process. Dave continued: “Since taking on the cinema industry just a few years ago, Meyer Sound has raised the bar when it comes to playback accuracy and sonic transparency. Movie mixing engineers especially appreciate the Acheron because to them it best represents their mixing intention.” The ‘M’ screen has been equipped with one Acheron 100 screen channel loudspeaker as a centre channel and two Acheron 80 screen channel loudspeakers for left and right channels. These have been supplemented by Acheron LF low frequency screen channel loudspeakers, which were installed to ensure ample low frequency headroom on the left / centre / right channels. Sub- bass is thrust via six X-800C high power cinema subwoofers. They provide very low distortion, extended bandwidth and extreme low frequency transients. The subwoofers have been placed in a row on the floor, behind the screen, as this configuration produces a constant smooth sound for the whole of the auditorium. Side and rear channels are taken care of by 18 HMS-10 surround
