086 VENUE

WHISKY MIST

BEIRUT, LEBANON EUROPE/MIDDLE EAST/AFRICA

When a nightclub establishes a successful reputation it is often tempting for the owners to open another venue under the same brand. This was the case for Whisky Mist. The original venue is lo- cated in Mayfair, London - and a second London branch has recently opened within Harrods, Knightbridge. However, wanting to venture further than the UK, the owners selected Beirut for the next location. Co-owner Marc Burton said: “Encouraged by the overwhelming success of the Whisky Mist in London, we began looking around for a second location. We picked Lebanon because the people are cultured and educated. Beirut is flourishing.” With a foundation back in London, the owners were keen to retain the high standards that were already associated with the brand. They wanted to transport every aspect of glamour and sophistication from the London club into the nightlife scene of Lebanon’s capital city. The owners went in search of design and installation companies that were going to meet their expectations for the 350-capacity club. Whisky Mist is located within the five-star Intercontinental Phoenicia Beirut hotel. When it came to installing the correct lighting equip- ment, the task fell to Intramuro Interior Contracting. It contacted Sur-

rey based Light Tecnica to assist with the project, which in turn got in touch with A.C. Special Projects Ltd (ACSP). The latter was asked to consult on products that would realise the proposed concepts, plus assist in developing a complete, flexible, easy to operate and manageable control solution.

The lighting brief for the venue focussed on creating atmosphere and mood. Whisky Mist wanted to be amongst the global nightlife lead- ers, and for that, something special was required. The eye-catching feature came in the form of an LED ceiling. The concept originated from the owners and was developed by Light Tecnica and ACSP, who wanted it to radiate out across the club. They wanted to create a dynamic selection of movement effects that would bring the space to life. The LED ceiling creates a stunning effect, which really invites the clubbers in.

The ceiling was created using Chroma-Q Color Web 250. Its light- weight and compact construction makes it perfect for ceiling attach- ment and the neat construction means the only elements visible are the illuminated pixels. The Color Web is fed with low-resolution video effects and graphics, which can be easily manipulated, changed and edited via a DMX controller. And, being an LED product, means the power consumption is minimal, without compromising the visual impact of the ceiling. To add to the ceiling effect, the owners also wanted to incorporate
