ANYTIME BAR AND DISCO AIDAsol’s main late night dance venue incorporates internal and external spaces. In keeping with the overall design concept of the ship, spaces flow into one another, like the dancefloor, which extends through a retractable glass wall to the outside area. The main room is washed in colour by a Philips Color Kinetics iColor Flex SLX system, which covers the walls and ceiling with internal LED illuminated tables and columns. This effect is continued to the outside bar and terrace by four Martin Professional Exterior 410 fixtures, each offering 5,600 lumens, a rugged IP65 housing, even colour mixing and low energy consumption due to it being an LED light fixture. Inside, the dancefloor is brought to life by a combination of Martin Professional smartMAC moving heads, Wizard Extreme discharge lights and and Atomic 3000 DMX strobes. These, the six American DJ Revo Burst LED Effects lights and 24 James Thomas Par 36 SN Pin Spot fixtures are controlled by a MA Lighting grandMA Micro. Compared to the Theatrium and Pooldeck, the Anytime Bar and Disco was a less challenging audio environment. The focus here is on an immersive sound configuration rather than on linear acoustic reproduction, as atmosphere takes precedence over a focal performance point. Both consultants cited the system’s ability to handle a spectrum of musical styles and reliability as the main reasons its selection. Polli-Holstein said: “We have installed very similar set-ups in seven locations over the last 10 years and I have never heard of a damaged speaker in the discotheque. The JBL Custom Shop was able to provide indoor and outdoor loudspeakers of the same audio quality, which ensures consistency throughout the venue.” Five JBL AM6215/95 2-way loudspeakers, four JBL SRX728S subwoofers and 18 JBL AC16 2-way speakers make up the speaker system. DJs play through a Formula Sound FSM-600 mixer, which is hooked up to a Denon DN-D4500 twin CD player and a Denon DN- HC4500 USB audio interface and MIDI controller. In terms of entertainment technology installations, AIDAsol is both varied and extensive. The independent arms of the technical team have worked in unison to provide a technological infrastructure that is both coherent to the whole, yet bespoke to the different needs of each area. The choice of speaker system is different in each of the venues, yet the amplification and a lot of manufacturer choices on the control side remain consistent. A similar pattern can be seen with the lighting equipment choices. Consistency in each set-up is achieved through the selection of the same manufacturers, particularly in the backbone of each configuration. Martin Professional fixtures star throughout, as does grandMA lighting control. Not only does this provide coherence to the operation, but it maintains a quality standard that is so vital to a cruise ship. Being at sea poses two main challenges to the equipment on a cruise ship. Firstly, it is asked to work to a fairly gruelling performance schedule, and secondly, it is exposed to some destructive weather conditions. In the case of AIDAsol, the
