The more I travel around the Asian market, the more I feel I am being recognised as the Editor for Asia Pacific. As our industry is very much about the people, I view this recognition as a positive sign. Visiting Asian countries can be such an eye opener, as the culture is so different from the Western world. Yet every Asian country has its own unique identity, and it could be argued that no two are exactly the same.
During my recent trip to South Korea to attend the KOBA Show, the cool and trendy atmosphere, the friendliness of the inhabitants, and how safe I felt exploring my surroundings genuinely surprised me. Korea also marked my first time singing on Asian karaoke. It was inevitably going to happen (or so I was told), but I have no doubt that I sounded terrible! Ah well, it is all part of the experience. There are a number of places in the Far East that I’ve yet to see, including Hong Kong, Thailand, and Malaysia, but I do need a reason for visiting them. If you have projects going on in these regions, or anywhere else at the moment, then please do get in touch. Going back to ours being a people industry, it was very sad to hear news of a number of deaths over the past few months. Most recently, former Sales & Marketing Director of Martin Audio, and PLASA Chairman Rob Lingfield lost his fight with cancer on 19 June. Although I personally only knew Rob for a short time, I knew him enough to know that he was a well-loved character who will be sorely missed. The industry has lost a true gentleman in Rob. A similarity between those who have passed away is their sheer determination and passion for the audio, lighting and visual worlds. Whether you are an industry veteran, a budding technology fanatic or a complete newcomer, we owe it to all those who have left this life to make the most of this industry. I hope you’ll join me in remembering, but not forgetting, and looking forward to the future, as I’m sure they would have wanted.

The near future holds yet another trip to Asia for me. So as the ink sets on this page I’ll be boarding my flight to Singapore for Palme Asia, then travelling on to Sydney for Entech. I hope to see some of you out there.
