The triumph of teamwork
The Intelligent Sport® UK Challenge 2011 took place in mid-June on Exmoor and attracted a hugely impressive number of teams from the UK and beyond. The challenge was, as always, to take part in the most demanding corporate team event anywhere in the world.
A
nd it was a truly international team line up this year, with LBCI from Lebanon, Sanlam Investment Management and Prescient from South Africa, World Water Works from the USA and Telenor – the reigning champions - from Norway.
Steeped in medieval history and home to the Luttrell family for over 600 years, Dunster Castle provided the dramatic backdrop for the first challenge. It all kicked off at 10.30 on the Wednesday evening with a mentally and physically gruelling puzzle challenge that had teams charging over the rugged terrain of the Dunster Estate in the dark, solving clues and racing the clock.
After only a few short hours of sleep, the teams were off again on a gruelling 6 hour mind/body challenge that had them
biking through the Quantock Hills. A variety of challenges involving more running, biking and problem-solving followed, all aimed at bringing out the very best in collaborative teamwork. After a fantastic week of blood, sweat and tears, the relief and satisfaction were on the teams’ faces for all to see at the champagne-fuelled finish area on Saturday afternoon, not least as between them the teams raised a staggering £310,000 for the NSPCC.
The reason teams come back year after year was expressed best by Tom Davies, who is Principal Engineer at Capita Symonds. He said, ‘The Intelligent Sport® UK Challenge empowers teams and this is reflected in the workplace. It teaches them responsibility, decision making skills but, above all, it is great fun and brings us closer together.’
The final event of the day was filmed and can be seen on Channel 4 at 7.30am on July 31st.
