QUALITY CRAFTSMANSHIP Handmade Kitchens STORY: Tim Higham of Higham Furniture
DESIGN AND LAYOUT CONSIDERATIONS It is a challenge to create practical
kitchen designs that make the most of modern appliances while still respecting the aesthetics of a period property. The modern fitted kitchen with integrated appliances did not really exist until the 1920’s. Before that houses would have had more of a free- standing layout. Victorian kitchens were designed to be primarily functional with perhaps a built

in dresser and a table for food preparation. While provision for storage is now often a primary concern, people thinking about a modern kitchen in a period property should avoid the temptation to fill every space with kitchen units. If you have the space, think about having a free-standing or built- in larder. The idea is to produce something modern
and functional that still has a period feel about it. A Hybrid kitchen is neither ultra modern nor an impractical facsimile of a
Victorian or Georgian kitchen. After all, most of us would not want to go back to gas lamps, coal and no running hot water for the sake of an authentic kitchen! For period properties the style of the
in-frame kitchen where the doors sit inside a visible frame is often preferable to the more modern lay-on door style where the doors cloak the entire cabinet. Using quality butt hinges to hang the doors from a frame attached to the front of the cabinets creates a timeless and handmade look.
