It may seem as though learning needs to take a vacation right along with your child this summer, but that's not that case. It may not be easy to get your child to sit down for a formal summer schooling session, but there are a number of summer learning activities and summer reading lists that can be used to supplement your child's fun and prevent summer learning loss.
Your child may moan and groan at the thought of assigned reading, which is probably why many school districts and teachers hesitate to assign books to be read over the summer.
That doesn't mean that your child should- n't be reading. Whether he's entering kin- dergarten in the fall and practicing his reading readiness skills or is moving out of picture books and devouring chapter books by the shelf, there are always new books to be explored.
There are a number of ways for you to
teach math skills at home, but your child doesn't necessarily have to stay home this summer to practice his math. Luckily, math can be found everywhere and, as teachers and parents know, it's important to make use of those teachable moments when they occur. Be on the lookout for those teachable math moments in the following places:
At the store. There are many mathematical challenges to be found at the grocery store.
On the road. Add some new road trip (math) games so you don't spend the whole trip counting blue cars or looking for cows.
On the computer. Your child's electronic time can be educational
