Initiatives Communication
To improve communication, the Dean of Students and Director of Campus & Community Involvement attended several Greek Council meetings. The Dean of Students asked to be invited to organization meetings to address any issues and to learn more about organizations. The Spurs, Gamma Chi Delta, Chi Beta Epsilon, and Sigma Theta Tau sororities extended invitations. The presidents of Zeta Chi, Chi Delta Tau, Alpha Chi Lambda and Gamma Chi Delta accepted invitations to meet individually.
Greek Talk, an interactive and unfiltered listserv was started by the Director of Campus & Community Involvement. This open forum is designed to increase routine and spontaneous communication between the staff, students, and alumni.
In addition, the Dean of Students hosted a dinner for members of Greek Council, hosted a reception for Greek Alumni over Alumni Weekend, and hosted several meetings with the leadership of the Greek Alumni Advisory Council.
Consulting
Student Affairs invested in consulting services in September, 2010 to review the Greek life program and specifically advise Greek Council and organizations on best practices. At the organization level, the consultant provided individual advice and reports. The University and consultant signed confidentiality statements so the students and alumni could speak frankly with the consultant without fear of retribution. Meetings consisted of 28.75 hours of individual consulting time with 14 organizations. Several organizations had more than one meeting and four brought alumni with them to their meetings.
The overall report from the consultant points out the lack of communication and trust between the students, alumni, and Student Affairs staff. Several of these issues were addressed over the course of the year.
