ONBOARD Lazarette Brass belaying pin

Who needs modern cleats when you can have a brass belaying pin with the classic tying off ‘one hug and three kisses’ turn in your pinrail? This one is their smallest at 130mm (5in) high at £11 but they go up to 285mm (almost a foot) which are the ones that double up as a cosh in those films. A cornucopia of quality classic boat kit is available from this German website: www.toplicht.de.

Vacuum cooker

It is always a testament to design to see things meant for your boat ending up in your house. This is an astonishing fuel-saving ‘eco-friendly thermal cooker’ with an internal

pot that, once brought to the boil is put in the locking outer vacuum pot and has no more need for power or gas for the next eight hours but still keeps cooking. This enables us to make pot-based meals we’ve normally only

dreamed of without using up

all our gas. Not only that but, acting as a normal vacuum flask, it kept ice

for four days. Groundbreaking, innovative, green and brilliant. Cookbook, bread and cake-makers sold separately. £69.95 www.

Sunglasses

Polaroid sunnies are brilliant at taking the glare off the surface of the sea and keeping your eyes relaxed on the brightest of days. They also give a diamond-studded wavelet-rippled sea surface a kind of silky look as a sea breeze starts up. These Axel X8003F are a classic ‘Wayfarer’ look with rectangular ‘copper’ lenses offering 100% UV400 protection. At £85 the 124mm wide frames are so comfy you don’t know you’re wearing them. http://shop. polaroidsunglasses.co.uk

Trad radar reflector

This is the latest version of the popular EM230 radar reflector, from Echomax. Internally the 61cm long reflector is the same as before but the company has ordered some brown polyethylene casings to suit classic boats. This is a passive type reflector – it replaced the Firdell Blipper, and uses the same mast fixings with 545mm centres. Makers claim it scores very highly with S (ships) type radar with 80% visibility at five miles. CB has not tested these claims. www.echomax.co.uk

Canvas shoe

The classic sailing shoe of blue canvas over a high welted white rubber sole used to be ubiquitous... but seems less so now. This version is rather superior, from Sperry Topsiders – the Striper Lace. It’s in gorgeously washed out, smooth blue canvas and has luxurious feeling laces as well as removable (washable) well- cushioned insoles. The flat, wavy-cut white rubber sole gives excellent grip on wet decks and it’s comfy to wear, eyelets on the instep providing some extra ventilation. Available in the UK at £50: for UK stockists telephone: +44 (0)800 1571 8100.
