iSOFT debuts Mobility Suite for iPad at Cabrini Health
Doctors at Cabrini Health now have the ability to remotely access patient results and critical information for the first time, thanks to the deployment of an iPad solution developed by iSOFT. The iSOFT Mobility Suite allows
doctors to view clinical information contained in a number of different hospital systems, providing a consolidated view of key patient information. Pathology and radiology results, clinical observations, medication and problem lists, and allergies and alerts, theatre lists and clinician diaries are all visible through the application. The Mobility Suite has been designed
to work wherever a network connection is achievable, either in the hospital or over a 3G connection. The connection between the devices running the application and the servers holding the clinical data is encrypted to protect patient privacy. iSOFT designed the application in
consultation with Associate Professor Simon Woods, Executive Director of Medical Services, Cabrini Health. “There are a lot of risks and inefficiencies with the current paper-based system, it’s a barrier to good communication, to general practitioners, and other referrals,” explains Professor Woods. “Many of our doctors — myself included in private [practice] — have abandoned paper records and run our own practice management systems. But the task for a hospital to implement that is much greater than a single practitioner.” Cabrini Health in Melbourne is the first
hospital to begin using iSOFT Mobility Suite, with over 50 doctors adopting the system in May to view and update their patients’ clinical and administrative information including patient notes, X-rays, scans and blood test results. “While our primary customer is the

patient, to a larger extent our other group of customers is our doctors, as they choose to come here, they choose to bring their patients here, they choose to base their practices here, and we have to provide them with what they want, not what we want them to have,” says Professor Woods. “The most obvious and immediate
benefit we’re seeing is much faster and more convenient access to information for clinical decision making, which means we can provide even better care for our patients and their families. “Having the device in our hands is also
giving us improved communication with patients and families because we can now show results and images on the iPad and discuss it with them on the spot.” iSOFT Managing Director, James Rice,
believes that the application provides the sector with “a more pragmatic and incremental approach to supporting clinicians needs”. “The iSOFT Mobility Suite draws
together information from many different sources within the hospital, saving time and creating better efficiencies for doctors and hospital staff; crossing from imaging to pathology to administration and even tracking patients as they move around the hospital for tests or an operation.” iSOFT intends to extend the
functionality of the Mobility Suite over time to include abilities such as discharge summaries and e-prescribing. “While we have all of this ability now,
it is the start of what we see to be quite an incremental journey into a whole range of functionalities and information,” says Mr Rice, “It’s the start of what we would call a transformational project in terms of how clinicians care for patients in hospitals.” — Cara Sayer-Bourne
