Youth Chronicles


Chelsea Karbon, Dana Eger and Kendal Flegenheimer, all of Chandler, are the recipients of the HON 190 Best of Class Writing Awards for Fall 2010 at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. The students were recognized at the Honors Program’s Award Convocation held recently at the university.


Elizabeth Vogt, Jared Ruchensky, Sarah Wolnisty, and Kelsey Ham, all of Chandler, are Spring Dean’s List students at Creighton University in Omaha, NB, for the 2010-11 academic year. Full-time students who earn a 3.5 grade point average or better on a 4.0 scale are eligible for the Dean’s Honor Roll.


Julia Peairs of Chandler, a senior studying equestrian science and biology with a pre- veterinary concentration at William Woods University in Fulton, MO, will study at Oatridge College in rural West Lothian, Scotland this summer. Oatridge College specializes in a range of rural programs, including agriculture, horticulture, animal care and environmental management, and is the home of the Scottish National Equestrian Centre. Julia’s summer studies of animal science and equine studies will provide her with unit qualifications counting toward her degree.


Karin Knudson of Chandler receives a Bachelor of Science in marine biology from Maine Maritime Academy at the college’s 68th Commencement held this spring. Knudson is a graduate of Hamilton High School in Chandler. Maine Maritime Academy is a public, coeducational college specializing in ocean and marine-oriented programs at undergraduate and graduate levels.


Kristen Thurmond of Chandler graduates with a Master of Science in nutrition and dietetics from State University of New York Oneonta, a liberal arts college focusing on teaching and learning.


CTA-Independence Hawks


Robotics Club – CTA-Independence will introduce fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders to the amazing world of robotics with a Robotics Club beginning July 27. Students will create autonomous machines using LEGO Mindstorms, assisted by high school students under the guidance of sixth-grade teachers. Save the date – Meet the Teacher Night is from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thu., July 21. Classrooms will be open so students can meet their new teacher. Free Otter Pops will be available in the cafeteria, along with information about joining the school’s PTO, Dad’s Club, Art Masterpiece program and more. Youth Basha Bobcats


Save the dates – Basha’s Meet Your Teacher Day is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thu., July 21, followed by the first day of school, which begins at 8:30 a.m. Mon., July 25. Students may arrive on campus after 8:05 a.m. For those needing to arrive earlier, Kids Express is available on campus for before- and after-school care. For more information about Kids Express, visit www.cusdcommunity.com. Help wanted – Basha seeks a Noon Duty Aide to work from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.
