Neighbors Life Line Screening offered in Chandler


Area residents can take advantage of affordable, preventative health screenings offered throughout the Valley by Catholic Healthcare West East Valley in July. Staffed by highly trained healthcare professionals, Life Line Screening offers testing and assessments for stroke, carotid artery disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm, atrial fibrillation, peripheral arterial disease, heart disease risk, osteoporosis risk, elevated c-reactive protein, high cholesterol, Type 2 diabetes and elevated liver enzymes. Screening packages start at $60. Area screenings are held beginning at 9 a.m. Sat., July 23 at First Baptist Church, located at 3405 S. Arizona Ave. in Chandler. Additional screenings are offered in Mesa and Tempe in July.

Golf tourney boosts H.O.P.E.


The 2011 H.O.P.E. Scholarship United Athletes Foundation Celebrity Golf Tournament is Sat., July 2 at Whirlwind Golf Club at Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort & Spa in Chandler.


The tournament raises awareness and money for the H.O.P.E. Scholarship Fund, which funds four-year university degrees for disadvantaged students in the fields of healthcare, education and the arts.


The shotgun tee time takes place from 7 to 11 a.m. A private VIP Red Carpet Estate Party for all tournament participants and celebrities is also held that evening, featuring live entertainment, a hosted bar and valet parking in Chandler. Past participants include NBA star Lafayette Lever, baseball great Rickey Henderson and golf legend Dan Pohl. This year’s tournament is expected to include ESPN’s Michael Wilbon, pro golfer Andy Walker, Reggie Howard and Arizona Cardinal Jeremy Bridges, along with other professional and former athletes in football, baseball and golf. The cost is $150 per person. Singles are encouraged to register and will be paired up as needed. Celebrities will join four-person teams for a donation of $1,200 per team, and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. All donations are tax-deductible. To date, 85 students have graduated from four-year universities utilizing the H.O.P.E. Scholarship Fund.

Community cancer patients who have had mastectomies but are not undergoing reconstructive surgery are eligible for free “knitted knockers.” The Cancer Center at Chandler Regional Medical Center and Tempe Yarn and Fiber provide the “knockers,” handmade prostheses that are softer and more comfortable than silicone prostheses. Some prostheses are weighted with a stone to feel more natural. Words of encouragement are written on some of the stones, too. “We are delighted to offer additional support to cancer patients by providing these giveaways to our community,” says Jennifer Backer, director of
