Christians against Poverty

I am pleased to announce that at our last PCC meeting in June the go ahead was given for St George’s to become a CAP centre. This will mean that as a church we will be directly able to help people in the Stamford area who are caught up in the darkness and isolation of debt. We will need to employ in partnership with CAP headquarters two people part time to be our CAP centre manager and debt advisor.

connect Stamfordians up with the St George’s CAP centre where they will receive a visit from the centre manager, the debt coach and all the help that CAP has to offer, which may include emergency food aid.

Co-operative Social Action

CAP Money course

We have been running the CAP money course which has been a huge help to individuals and families wanting to learn about managing their finances better. Sadly when serious debt problems have arisen we have been unable to use the CAP expertise based in Bradford as we have not been a full CAP centre.

CAP Centre

We hope to open as a centre in the autumn. The centre manager will be responsible for promoting the work of CAP in Stamford so that local people have access to the full range of support from head office in Bradford. CAP in Bradford will

Mike Mills has done local research that suggests that debt is a very real p r o b l em i n o u r community. Given our partnership with Christ Church this project fits in very well with our stated aim of reaching out through co-operative social action.

How Much?

CAP headquarters have to approve the people that we put forward for the roles and we have two people to forward to t h em f r om o u r advertising a few years ago. The total cost of becoming a CAP centre will be in the region of £25,000 per year, which includes a contribution to the centre in Bradford and the part time employment of two workers locally.

Local Trusts Involved

The good news is that two local trusts are willing to put in £15,000 a year towards the running of the CAP centre. One of these trusts which is willing to offer £10,000 per year is looking for match funding from the Church. Our challenge is to find another £10,000 per year to run with this project.

Gift Day Sunday September 18th

.

On Sunday September 18th

I would like to call a

Gift Day for the specific purpose of establishing a CAP centre at St George’s Stamford. Whatever we raise will go into a restricted fund for the express purpose of the ongoing work of the CAP centre. If we raise £30,000 we will have three years of backing to add to the grants that are being made available to us.

I commend our Gift Day to you and ask for your prayers as we seek to move forwards with the CAP centre. I will write again about this towards the end of the summer to remind everyone about the gift day.
