Masters Swimmers Take Talents North and South
O
ne MAC masters swimmer went north to the Pacific Northwest Association
zone championship SCY meet, and another went way south to the SCY national champi- onships in April. Mike Dowd joined the Oregon swimmers
in Federal Way, Wash., on April 9-10 and swam against teams from Washington. In his 50-54 age group, Dowd placed second in the 200 butterfly, third in the 200 breast- stroke, fourth in the 100 breaststroke, sixth in the 200 individual medley, seventh in the 50 backstroke and seventh in the 100 individual medley.
Mike Peyton joined 40 Oregon swimmers
in Mesa, Ariz., on April 28-30 and competed against over 1,800 swimmers from over 200 teams from across thecountry. In his 55-59 age group, Peyton placed ninth in the 1,000 freestyle, 20th in the 200 freestyle, 26th in the 100 freestyle, 34th in the 50 freestyle and 35th in the 50 butterfly. With the other Oregon swimmers, Peyton placed 12th in the mixed 55-plus 200 medley relay and 12th in the men’s 55-plus 200 freestyle relay.
Announcements
MAC masters swimmer Ben Weston became a father on April 27 when his wife Carrie gave birth to their son, Luke Isaiah Weston. Congratulations from the team. MAC members James and Barb Gaffney are coordinating a Portland open-water swimming event in August for their daughter Karen, the Karen Gaffney Foundation, and Providence Hospital. The course is in the Columbia River for about six miles between I-205 and I-5 along the Washington shore. This fund raiser may become an annual event. The annual “home” meet for the masters
swimmers has been moved to Sunday, Oct. 9 this year. Normally this meet takes place in December, but the team (and many Oregon swimmers) wanted it before the national SCM championships in early December and this was the next available date. Come and support the MAC swimmers in the West Pool as a timer or help out with the meet planning. Contact any swim coach for more details. For more information on MAC swimming,
call the Aquatics Office at 503-517-7500 or go to
theMAC.com.
