Synchro Produces National Team Members and International Competitors
M
AC synchro is quickly becoming a regular feeder program for the U.S. national teams. The program has yielded two more national team members this spring. Recent athletic member Sarah House was named to the U.S. junior national team, which competes in the Pan American age group games in Montreal this summer. House honed her skills at MAC from Fall 2007 through August 2010 before moving to California, where she currently swims for the top-ranked Walnut Creek Aquanuts club. She came back in January to attend the 2011 Banquet of Champions with former teammates Kathleen Lance and Katy Wiita, who together with House were nominated for the Mel Fox Award for their historic gold-medal trio performance at the 2010 U.S. open championship. Junior Renee Zhang was named to the 12-under national team after a grueling three-day trials process in Santa Clara, Calif., in May. Zhang was a strong contender, ranking third in the figure
event and fourth overall, placing her in the top 12 swimmers in the country, age 12 and younger. Her appointment leads to a great training opportunity in early August, when the 12-under national team partici- pates in a two-week intensive training camp in Indianapolis with top collegiate and national team coaches. experience an international exchange with members of Aruba’s national team and a top collegiate athlete from Russia, as well as the opportunity to train with the senior elite athletes on U.S. National Team 1. This puts Zhang in contact with former teammate Katy Wiita, who is attending the World Championships Saturday, July 16 through Sunday, July 31 in Shanghai, China, with U.S. National Team 1.
