Polar Bears Have Fun Without the Cold Water

T

he Polar Bears go back a long way in the history of the club. Besides pool activities at the club, the participants formerly did a yearly morning swim on New Year’s Day, in the Willamette River or the Columbia River. This is no longer done. In recent years, the members appar- ently are reluctant to get that cold or simply do not feel up to it on New Year’s morning.

Current activities include a one-hour

water-volleyball game at the West Pool at noon each Wednesday. A special ball is used. The players set up a special net with the help of the MAC staff. A lively game is played with eight to 12 members divided into two opposing teams. The players are in water up to the chest level An ideal team would be is four, fi ve or six men. The group is sometimes short of that number and welcome new players. Everyone has a rollicking good time. There are no age restrictions; current players range in age from the 50s to the 80s.
