Four MAC City League Tennis Teams are on the Move

M

AC has experienced a historic year in City League. As the season wound down for summer, four MAC teams finished in first place in their divi- sions and move up to the next level. This has not happened in more than a quarter of a century. No MAC teams finished in last place so no team moves down. Teams range in level from A to K. MAC has 10 teams: A, B, C, D, E, F, H Red and H Blue, J and K.

The C team won nine points ahead of the second-place team, with 132 points. Points are earned by winning a set during each match. The club with the highest number of points wins the division and moves up to the next division level for the fall.

Kim Spathas and Marcia Floberg served as co-captains. Team members were Bev Afghan, Michaela Bancud, Lori Bernhardt, Diana Callaway, Meredith Davis, Geni Director, Catherine Go, Sarah Grewe, Karen Holce, Ginney Larner, Linda Lovett, Laura Luthi, Peggy McClendon, Marianne Ritchie, Carol Robertson, Della Shanley and Nancy Williams.

The D team is celebrating its stunning

victory, which it won by one point. The team’s last match was filled with nail-biting sets, tie-breaks, perspiration and persis- tence. The ladies had to wait to see how other teams in their division were doing, and they knew it would be close, because the team just behind them had a chance of pulling ahead. However, it did not gain the needed points to take the division, and MAC won.

As the news came out, the team was celebrating. Cullen Ware served as captain and Janet Dowty served as co-captain. “Wow, we did it! I just now received confir- mation from Portland Tennis Center, that we have won our division by one point! What a great team effort,” proclaimed Ware’s email to her team.

“The D team [put out a true] team effort … every single set we won this year was the winning set! I ate so many Pepto Bismol tabs yesterday I thought I would

glow in the dark,” exclaimed team member Anna Donovan.

“Great job Captain! Way to lead us up the winning path,” wrote Linda Temple. Marilyn von Bergen said it all, “A fantastic way to cap off a great year of teamwork! Thanks for the excellent leader- ship, Cullen and Janet.” Team members were: Jenny Bayless, Donovan, Marlyne Gilley, Betty Grant, Julia Hall, Judy Hamilton, Diane Harris, Krista Kabacy, Mary Keller, Lanell Nolf, Sandy Patchin, Judith Rees, Sherryl Reser, Gail Smith, Sally Sterling, Valda Summers, Temple, Susan Terrall, Marilyn von Bergen and Gina Wissmiller.

The F-level team, coached by Craig

Koessler, finished an amazing seven points ahead of the No. 2 team by earning 121 points. This team is a true championship team. Last year they won their division and moved up from G to play at the F level. Because a team is playing at a higher level and facing stiffer competition it is usual to

see them stay at the new level awhile. Not the F team. They moved on up in compe- tition and zoomed into first-place status with solid wins, consistency and a lot of practice and good coaching. Kendra Dauenhauer served as the captain and planned the best line-ups and great strategy. Her insight paid off and they won. Team members include: Antonia Green, Kari Anderton, Carolyn Bachhuber, Leslie Bridwell, Geraldine Carter, Heidi Clark, Robin Collins, Robin Costic, Melissa Crawford, Elizabeth English, Barbara Friesen, Donna Hedford, Nancy Hinnon, Darci Keljo, Lynn Mackenzie, Suds Nice, Julie Nichols, Kim Stevens, Corinne Stewart, Sara Weinstein and Beth Zilbert.

The H Red team enjoyed competi- tion from teams across the metro area. Although everyone had fun there was still an edge of competition. The H Red team honed that edge and it paid off. The team won by 10 points over the second-
