Weekend Cycling Includes Activities for Athletes of all Levels
I
n years past, the Cycling Committee’s highly successful Second Saturday Ride series has taken a break in July to accom- modate the annual Wine Ride. This year members get both. MAC’s premier cycling event of the year, the annual Wine Ride, is Sunday, July 24 at Eola Hills Winery, just 15 miles west of Salem. The July Second Saturday ride is July 9. The Wine Ride is the largest MAC cycling event of the year. There are two distances again this year: 36.8 miles and 19.7 miles. This ride is all about fun and good times and is designed for rides or all abilities. The ride takes cyclists along rolling farmland, over the Willamette River via the Buena Vista Ferry, and finishes with the highlight of the ride: the best brunch in the Pacific Northwest at the Eola Hills Winery. Water and snacks are available at the
halfway point, and a mechanic from Lakeside Bicycles is on hand to assist riders at the start and again at the halfway point. Although there is some rider support, all cyclists should bring their own water bottles, cell phone, spare tube and the necessary tools to change a flat tire. Helmets are required at all MAC cycling events. The cost of the ride is $10 and serves
as the only MAC cycling fundraiser of the year. All MAC members are invited and are welcome to bring guests. Participants should arrive by 8:30 a.m. to sign waivers and be ready to ride by 9 a.m. Those who want to enjoy brunch are charged a reduced rate of $19.95 by Eola Hills Winery for the buffet, which includes made-to-order eggs Benedict, omelets, waffles, oysters, pasta bar, meats, soups, salads and two glasses of wine or champagne. Members eat in a designated area under canopies in the garden and should ask for the MAC discount when they pay for their brunch at the winery. Pre-registration of this ride is required. Members must pay through the website for any guests they bring. Those who want to only participate in the ride should use Quick Register CY100. Those who also want to do the ride and join in the brunch should use Quick Register CY200. The
MAC cyclists luck out in July, with two planned Second Saturday rides.
$10 registration fee is charged directly to the member’s account. Members pay for the brunch at Eola Hills. For the latest details, visit

July Second Saturday Ride
Coach Ian Penner has designed a wonderfully challenging bonus Second Saturday ride on July 9. Cyclists meet at West Union School (west of Portland off of Highway 26) for a ride that includes the climbs of Dorland Road and Logie Trail. MAC cyclists did this ride for the first time in 2010 and participants uniformly said it was the hardest Second Saturday ride of the year. At the end of the ride, everyone gathers at McMenamins at Rock Creek for food and refreshments.
Club championships
Coach Sheppard and Coach White have created a MAC cycling championship series in July and August. This race series is designed for riders of all abilities. The 12-mile individual time trial on Sauvie Island is Wednesday, July 6. The plan is
to ride out the dike road for six miles of rolling terrain and back, to complete a 12-mile race. The Logie Trail hill climb event is
Wednesday, July 20. This is one of the harder climbs in the Portland area and should be a good test to find the best climber at MAC. The team time trial on Sauvie Island
is Wednesday, Aug. 3. Riders use the dike road for this time trial, but instead of individuals doing the race, teams are comprised of three or four members, with the time taken on the third rider across the line. This event focuses on strength and team work, and is great fun to ride. Last year saw beautiful trophies to the winners, a fun dinner afterward, and brag- ging rights for the past year. The MAC cycling coaches won in 2010, beating the triathletes by one second. There is sure to be a rematch this year. The Cycling Committee encourages all the MAC cyclists to come out and participate. Get bike, legs and lungs in shape and join the fun this year. For more information on MAC cycling, call Athletic Services at 503-517-7525 or go to
