cheese? Not too long ago our board hosted board members from another West Coast club. What do you think surprised them about MAC? To give you a few seconds to think about it, the answer appears in the end of this column. Clue: its not cheese.

became a goal in the 2011 Action Plan. Communications Director Michole Jensen says there are some technical limitations in the system that will take some time to work out, but in the meantime he also sees opportunities to make better use of the system as it is. Some of the recent changes include putting the search function at the top of nearly every page on the site and the creation of a more comprehensive help page. He also is devoting a page every month in the magazine for information on the website. You can read more on page 12. If you have ideas on how the website might be improved, put them in a Sounding Board and send them along or simply email Michole.

While Michole is tuning up the existing website, Sebastian Wetzel is leading an ad hoc member committee to look at possibilities to make use of social media at MAC. In fact, there are a number of social media applications in use around the club, but they have developed spontaneously. If we do nothing, we can expect to see more applications crop up. We have two principle concerns. The first concerns standards for applications associated with MAC. The second is to identify and implement social media appli- cations that make sense at MAC. Given the energy of this group, I would expect to see a proposal for a new application coming to the Board of Trustees in the near future.

Noticing the unexpected

It is always interesting how people notice the most unexpected things. An acquaintance introduced me to her parents visiting Portland from China. What did they find unusual about our country? Cheese. Did anybody expect it would be

As I write this, the Men’s Bar project is on budget and on schedule to be completed in early July. By the time you read this, I hope you have had an opportu- nity to enjoy the expanded Men’s Bar, and the new MACtinis, an adult place for a cocktail or a meal. And card players, your exile should be over. Enjoy the new Game Room.

As we improve our adult facilities, we are also making some accommodations for families using the Sports Pub. Last month we announced that we would admit children in long basketball shorts and that flip flops would now be accept- able in the pub, and on game nights, on the Stadium Terrace. The board is also considering a modification to our current policy, which has permitted juniors accom- panied by adults in the pub until 8 p.m. The policy change recommended by the House Committee would permit juniors accompanied by adults to remain in the pub’s “upper area” and in the Cornerstone Lounge just outside the pub until 10 p.m. So here is a question for you. As we tune up the Men’s Bar and add MACtinis, do you have any observations on dress code in these adult areas? Put your views in a Sounding Board and let us know. OK, what surprised our guests from that other West Coast club? They thought it was unusual that members and employees “talked to each other.” Wow! Of course we talk to each other, and we also work hand-in-hand on many commit- tees and else where. I am very proud of the 500 people that work here, and of our tradition of friendly mutual respect. So to all of you who work hard to make MAC a great place, thank you. With summer finally here I can resume my favorite outdoor sport, pulling weeds. Well, there are some other outdoor sports I am looking forward to as well. Enjoy the summer. WM
