Alfredo Guzman. He was fighting for the FMLN (guerilla militias) against El Salvador’s military government in a civil war that lasted from 1979-1992. His unit was suddenly ambushed by the govern- ment military from three sides, and within 15 minutes there were only three men left in his unit. A grenade exploded close to Alfredo,


wounding him, so he got up and started running. He ran into a church nearby that was meeting for services. He scared the people as he ran in with his weapon across his chest. He asked the pastor to pray for him, but the pastor simply responded by telling him he needed Jesus. They prayed together, and Alfredo accepted Christ. He then ran back into the mountains to hide and continued fighting in the war. But, he says, from the
