Wednesday’s repeat of Lewis at

8pm achieved a decent 3.7 million/16% for ITV1; the same as the new Marple the week before. It wasn’t enough to win the slot overall but was a cost-effective way of staying in the hunt, and Lewis had the edge over In With The Flynns at 8.30pm on BBC1 (3.6 million/17%). At 9pm, however, BBC1 recovered and The Appren- tice’s 7.6 million/31% was the series’ highest after the opener. BBC1’s Traffic Cops (4.2

million/19%) made more of a mess of ITV1’s The Choir That Rocks, reducing it to 2.3 million/10%, 200,000 down on launch.

‘Saturday nights feel a little lacklustre and for ITV1 the long wait for X Factor has begun’

Friday’s rain delivered the

perfect opportunity to put Andy Murray on in BBC1 peak, with the majority of the schedule swapping to BBC2. The British number 1’s win against someone or other raked in 6.5 million/29% from 7pm. All ITV1 could do was watch and fume; Paul O’Grady at 9pm fell to 2.8 million/12%, losing 600,000 from last week’s Lady Gaga special. Saturday nights feel a little lack-

lustre and for ITV1 the traditional long hot wait for The X Factor has officially begun. Penn & Teller: Fool Us (3.6 million/17%) was the channel’s best effort but it lost to National Lottery In It To Win It (4.7 million/22%). Marriage Ref, ITV1’s comedian-packed panel show, grew but 2.4 million/11% at 9pm isn’t really mustard-cutting; opposite, BBC1’s Casualty (5.2 million/23%) saw to that. Not that BBC1 can get the smugmobile out just yet; Lee Mack’s All Star Cast fell to 3.4 million/17% from a promising 4.2 million/20% on launch. On Sunday, ITV1’s Popstar To

Opera Star crumpled to 2.8 million/13%, losing not only to BBC1’s Countryfile (4.7 million/ 21%) but also BBC2’s Top Gear. ITV1’s Scott & Bailey’s reward for fending off BBC1’s Case Histories was the BBC’s retreat, with a Silent Witness repeat on 2.6 million/ 11%. The spot-on heartland ITV drama won with 5.5 million/24%.
