match BBC1 sees off ITV1 with fortuitously scheduled Friday peak coverage of Murray victory

day and wailing along to Maggie May with Rod Stewart in Hyde Park in billion degrees centigrade two days later. You have to admire Britain; which other country can drown you then fry you without any sort of acclimatising interim? In TV land, such acclimatisation
does occur, and this week was one of those times when everything slowed down a bit. ITV1 might feel it’s not at its best with a slightly iffy line-up saved principally by the bullseye of Scott & Bailey, while BBC1’s more beefy line-up also boasted, fortuitously, Andy Murray in peak time. Elsewhere, the apprentices cap-
tured the best 9pm audiences, while comedian fatigue may be setting in, as well as, less surprisingly maybe, opera-weariness. Anyone who’s sat through Janacek’s Cunning Little Vixen will understand. BBC1’s Case Histories ended
its OK-ish run on Monday. Its 4 million/17% wasn’t enough to beat Four Of A Kind, the latest doc- umentary in ITV1’s rather robust Monday night run, which won the slot with 4.2 million/17%. Record- ing will probably get BBC1’s drama nearer to 5 million in the end. The first series of Luther began
well but tumbled, ending on around 4 million. Series two looks more consistent so far, with episode two achieving 5.2 million/22%, only 400,000 down on launch. ITV1’s Baby Hospital grew a smidge but still lost (2.9 million/12%).
