Project Factory builds site for revolution doc

BY ALEX FARBER

Digital production business The Project Factory has won its first piece of business since launching in the UK, producing a website for feature-length doc How To Start A Revolution. The site, which launched last

week, supports the forthcoming Ruaridh Arrow-directed film about the life of non-violent revolution- ary Gene Sharp. It will premiere at festivals in September before being reversioned for TV. The film accrued the $60,000

funding it required via online crowd-funding platform Kick- starter. It is being produced inde- pendently by Lion head of development Richard Shaw. Sharp has written 13 books

including a manual on how to cause an uprising, which includes 180 non-violent weapons such as picking a colour to represent the struggle, disrupting state TV broadcasts and writing protest banners in English. The site features a Twitter

mash-up tool, Revolution Monitor, which allows visitors to explore a map of the world that highlights areas in which revo- lutions are under way and follow what is being tweeted in those locations.

WEB WATCH RADIO 3 WEBSITE

T

he BBC is revamping its Radio 3 website to allow visitors to access its range of audio-on-demand more easily. Both live streamed content and the station’s archive

of performances and special-interest shows will be featured more heavily. The site will feature a large carousel with links to rich media content, along with a range of dynamic web feeds to podcasts, event listings and music reviews. It will launch this week, having been overhauled by Leeds-

based digital agency Numiko, which won the work following a competitive pitch. Numiko project and operations manager Conrad Easton said

the aim was to broaden the appeal of the site. “We are looking to make the site more attractive by surfacing content that appeals to music experts as well as introducing new listeners to the station,” he said. “At the same time, we have looked to give it a more modern, cleaner feel.” Numiko also developed the BBC’s Your Paintings archive, which launched last week featuring 200,000 works of art.

Around half of the traffic to the

site is engaging with the Revolu- tion Monitor. The Project Factory managing

director Kirsty Hunter is currently in talks with broadcasters to offer them the service to integrate rele- vant shows into their own sites. Hunter, Lion Television’s former

head of interactive, joined The Project Factory in February to launch the Australian-based multi- platform indie in the UK.

the BBC will be expected to adhere to the tool to guarantee a consist- ent experience. The tool spans all 10 BBC

Online products, such as Children and Audio & Music, to make sure all games the BBC orders integrate with its platform. The Games Grid is also

designed to improve the experi- ence of gaming for audiences by making the broadcaster’s portfolio of games easier to explore and more intuitive through standard options and menu systems. To date, it has been used to save

users’ creative output in CBBC’s Tracy Beaker game and inventions in the Wallace & Gromit World of Invention game. A BBC spokesperson said: “Our

focus now is on how, in line with our editorial priorities for BBC Online, gaming technologies and games mechanics can be utilised across our products to make them more immersive and engaging.”
