Young Breeder of the Future Boy

Donavan Miguel is the recipient of the 2011 Young Breeder of the Future Boy Award. Donavan is an 11-year-old sixth grader from Hilmar, California.

Donavan Miguel

Within just two years Donovan has grown his herd to consist of 11 Registered Holsteins. Dono- van explained that he started out with two Registered Hol- steins and bought his first heifer at the Gil-Tex Stampede in 2009, with money he had saved. Dono- van’s brother knew the love and

passion he had for cows, so he handed down a small group of heifers for Donovan to work with, the group was offspring from his days of show- ing Registered Holsteins. Donavan explains that his cows are housed at Fernandes Dairy in Hilmar. He goes out to the dairy everyday to feed calves, work with show animals and also check on his milking cows. Donavan takes pride in being hands-on with his project and doing most of the work himself. He says that picking out bulls is his favorite thing to do, next to, showing his Holsteins.

Donavan is truly a hard worker and very involved in the showring. He was named the Outstanding 4-H Dairy Exhibitor at the 2010 Stanislaus County Fair, received Grand Champion awards twice at the Merced County Spring Fair and Merced County Fair in 2010, owned the Reserve Junior All-California Junior 3-Year Old Cow and Reserve Grand Champion at the Merced County Spring Fair in 2009, was Honorable Mention Junior

Champion and two-time Honorable Mention Grand Champion in 2010 at the Great Western Show, Merced County Spring Fair and Merced County Fair. He is also an excellent showman, he has won 1st place in showman- ship at both the California State Holstein Show and Merced County Spring Fair in 2010.

Outside of the showring, Donovan is involved with the Merced County Junior Holstein Club. He has attended cow camp and plans to be on the dairy bowl team this year. He is also an up and coming cattle judge. Donavan was on the 1st high team at Ken Melvold’s Holiday Auction contest, and placed 3rd individually. He placed as 5th high individual at the Cow Camp Contest and was the 3rd high individual at the Great Western Judging Contest.

Aside from Holstein activities, Donavan is a member of the Hilmar Colony 4-H group, were he is involved in the dairy project and Portuguese cook- ing class. He is also a “Straight-A” student at Hilmar Junior High School. Donovan is in the honor society and on the honor roll, for excellence in academics. He also finds time to be on the Renaissance Team.

When asked why he should be considered for this award, Donavan stated, “ I love working with Holstein cows. I work very hard with my herd and hand-select the A.I. bulls that are used on my cows. I like to figure out the perfect matings for my cows, so that their calves are even better than their mothers. I also like to halter-break and clip my own cows for show and take them to shows to see the results of my hard work.”

We congratulate Donavan on his Award as this year’s Young Breeder of the Future Boy!
