Jr. President’s Message Tony Lopes

It is my pleasure as the Presi- dent of California Jr. Holstein Association to announce that the Jr. Association is alive and well! Our activities for 2011 were kicked off at the California State Holstein Convention held in Bass Lake from January 27 -29. On be- half of the entire Jr. Holstein Association I would like to thank the Fresno- Madera Holstein Club and all Con- vention volunteers for mak-

ing the convention such a success. Troughout the fun-filled weekend, the Juniors competed in Dairy Bowl, Dairy Jeopardy, Speech Contests, and, for the first year, a Folding Display Board contest. Tose who were selected for awards and scholarships are highlighted in this California Holstein Annual. Congratula- tions to all! Te new 2011 CJHA Officer Team elected at the State Convention includes myself as President, Caitlin Lopes as Vice President, Colleen Allen as Secretary, Eric Migliazzo as Treasurer, Emilie Strand and Katie Migliazzo as our Reporters, and Dominic Balistreri and Justin Bopp as our Historians.

Te California Junior Holstein Association would like to thank all supporters of the Silent Auctions at the State Convention and State Show, which raised a combined total of approximate- ly $6,000. Without the continued generosity of all those who donate, volunteered or bid at the Silent Auctions, our Associa- tion would not be able to be as active as it is today. All proceeds of the Silent Auctions go towards the CJHA activities planned throughout the year, such as Cow Camp, Planning Conference, Scholarships and to help send Juniors to compete at the Na- tional Holstein Convention as well as at National Dairy Shows.

Te 2011 National Holstein Convention will be held this June in Richmond, Virginia. Tis year we will be sending a talented group of Juniors to compete in various contests. Our Junior Dairy Bowl participants are Kiara Gilardi, Alex Gambonini,

Frankie Gambonini, and Bailey Allen. In Junior Jeopardy we have Elisabeth Regusci, Elise Regusci, and Selina Lopes. Our In- termediate Jeopardy Contestants are Caitlin Lopes, Eric Migli- azzo, and Tony Lopes. In Senior Jeopardy Taylor Pires will be representing California. In addition to Dairy Jeopardy and Dairy Bowl, we also have Katie Migliazzo and Tony Lopes competing in the National Public Speaking Contest, Folding Display Con- testants are Emilie Strand and Alex Gambonini. California is fortunate this year to be home to National Distinguished Junior Member Semi-Finalist Mandy Brazil! California will also enter a Digital Scrapbook and a State Banner. Good Luck to all of our Juniors!

Cow Camp will be held July 6-8 in the Sonoma County area. Tis year will include a new twist, as we will actually be camp- ing in tents at Saralee’s Vineyard! Every year Cow Camp is lots of fun combined with learning, and this year is sure to be no different! Cow Camp Applications are due July 1, 2011, for this fun and educational trip. More information and Applications can be found at the California Holstein Association website. Also, the California State Fair will be held July 14-31 and there are sure to be many California Junior Members exhibiting their animals there. Good Luck to all those exhibiting!

Finally, I would like to thank the California Junior Holstein Association for allowing me to serve as their 2011 President. While our State Junior Association doesn’t have the member- ship numbers of some other states, we continue to be extreme- ly competitive and active each year at the National Holstein Convention, winning the National Junior Dairy Bowl in 2010. California is also home to the Winning 2010 International FFA Dairy Judging Team, and the winning 2010 National FFA Dairy Judging Team, which both included members of the CA Junior Holstein Association! We are one of the top Junior Holstein As- sociations in the nation, not because of quantity, but because of the quality of our members. Our California Junior Associa- tion is going strong thanks to all the participation of our mem- bers. Our Junior Association is the future of the Dairy Industry and it looks to be a Bright Future!
